TURKEY TROT - SO MUCH FUN!!!

I’ve been struggling w/ getting into a new groove — cold weather and snow has made it very difficult for me to get myself out of bed to run early in the morning. I ran a 5 mile turkey trot yesterday and it was awesome!! It was perfect weather, 40 degrees and sunny. It was a hilly course. My time was 49 minutes. Not great, but I was not pushing that hard. I think it gave me a lot of motivation to get back in the groove — I felt high all day. I love this running stuff, and I love the social aspect of the races!

I DID IT!!!

I ran my first half –the Columbus Half Marathon– yesterday. I had a goal of anything under 2:10. My time was 2:05! It was such an amazing experience. It was a pretty flat course (although the hill at mile 12 was brutal — not so much the grade as the fatigue!!). I felt great at mile 7, I actually commented that I felt like a machine and I could go forever. Then, I hit a wall at mile 11. I thought it would be easy when I knew I only had 2 miles to go but not the case!! The last 2 were a heck of a struggle but I did it and well under my time!! I cannot wait to do another!! Hoping to run Myrtle Beach on February 14th!

POST RACE REST?

I am running a half marathon on Sunday. I want to maintain my endurance as I plan to run another half in February, but I’m assuming it is best to give my body a break, or not? Do I take a week off after the run, or do I just run short runs, or is it perfectly fine to just continue with what I have been doing? I want to make sure I’m not over stressing anything so that I can be as strong as possible for the next race. Yet I fear losing it all quickly (not entirely realistic, I’m sure!) Any advise would be greatly appreciated!!

Elevation Question

I am running a half marathon in Columbus on October 19th. I really struggle with hills and I have no concept of what differences in elevation mean as far as running it. Can anyone tell me whether this means there will be any significant hills? I realize the term “significant” is relative — please remember I am a wimp! http://www.columbusmarathon.com/docs/ColsHalfMar_FS_FNL_9_30.pdf. Thanks!!

LAST LONG RUN

This morning was the last long run beofre my half martahon on October 19th. It was very chilly, about 38 degrees. It felt great! Ran 6, walked for about one minute to eat some GU and stretch legs, and then did 6 more. I cannot believe that I’m able to do this! On Friday, I felt a cold coming on and struggled through 5 miles. It really made me worry, but you cant let the bad days get ya — you are gonna have them — struggle through and start fresh. This running thing is such a mental game! I really think the struggle on Friday had more to do with me thinking the cold was inevitable, lots of sleep and rest and I’m fine! This morning, I told myself it was gonna happen, and it did! I’m running a 10k next Sunday, with the half the following Sunday. Is this really me doing all this?

Perfect Run!

I woke up to run this morning and it was 48 degrees. Chilly start but warmed up quickly. About 30 minutes into it, it started drizzling. It felt wonderful!! I ran 7 miles, 1:09. Not a great time but a pace that will give me a time just under 2:10 for the half marathon, assuming I can maintain the pace. That is my goal, although I hope I am happy just to complete it! This weeks long run is 12 miles on Sunday. The last long one before the race. I’m running a 10k one week before the half. Any thoughts on that? Hope its not a bad idea — would like to get a grip on race jitters before the big one. Possible? Gawd, I love this running stuff!

It’s Really Gonna Happen!

When I started training for a half marathon 12 weeks ago, I was only able to run 3-4 miles. I could not believe my body was going to handle that much, that quick. Well, it is! Yesterday’s mileage for the long run was 11 — our course was 11.6. I have been obsessed with my watch, and yesterday I forgot it. I’m done with it! It is so nice not to even worry about it — just go do your thing. No watch, no music, just chattin with a buddy! Time is not my concern (well, kinda), I really just want to focus on making it through this first one. I felt wonderful when it was done. This morning, I am a little sore, but in a good way! I am so happy to see it’s going to happen! YEEEEAAAAHHHHH!

Excellent Run!

I ran 7.4 miles this morning — my longest to date.  It felt really good.  My mother in law rode her bike with me because my running partner is out of town.  We chatted the entire time and it was really a lot of fun!  A few hills, nothing too intense.  I would have preferred a slightly better time, but I’m not going to worry too much about that.  I’d like to run for 1:20 tomorrow or Tuesday.  If I’m not too sore, is it okay to run taht far back to back like that?  I’m sooooo addicted!
